Artistic Exploration

The character of Lucy Darling dressed in soft blue and standing tall and confident against a field of warm earth tone brush strokes draws the eye immediately to the central figure. She is holding her signature martini (1 part gin, 2 parts vermouth with a hint of elderflower shaken over ice with a cherry); a wink to those who have seen the show.

Two childish imps clutch at Lucy’s elaborate gown. The dress itself is inspired by the opulent fabrics and silhouettes of fashion designer Vera Wang while the neckline offers a nod to Lucy’s iconic stage costume.

Unlike the historic use of imps in traditional magic lithographs, they do not whisper secrets to the magician. Rather, the imps look out at the viewer, shyly peaking out from behind their mistress with curiosity like small children. One smiles, the other stares out with a look of awe, a subtle reference to the dual aspects of comedy and wonder that together are the core of her performance philosophy.

The blue dress, trimmed in gold, when viewed in consideration with the childlike imps, references classic images of the holy Madonna, a figure of worship and love.

Her necklace and earring prominently feature a sapphire stone, the favorite gem of royals and kings. The sapphire is the traditional symbol of the guardianship of wisdom, much like role of the magician herself.

With her dominant leg stepping forward and her eyes fixed on the viewer,  Lucy steps into the future while acknowledging the significant history of magic.

Artistic Exploration

This image draws heavily on classical themes inspired by the rich history of magic iconography. In particular, Lucy drew her inspiration from the classic “Thurston the Great” lithograph, an image which includes the text “do the spirit come back?” Here instead, Lucy takes an active role in her magical performance, a statement, rather than a question.

In this image, Lucy is painted with soft brush strokes, a nod to the classic lithographic style represented here. Diagonal lines create a sense of movements and energy, drawing the eye back to the face of the central figure. We see spirits, in the playful form of cocktails, rise from her hands.  The Thurston poster, similarly, depicts spirits rising from a skull in the magician’s hand – here, three cocktails and two cherries float above in the magical swirls overhead, a nod to two of Lucy’s most iconic acts

While the content of the image is inspired by Thurston, the colouring is done in the tones typical of “Carter the Great”, combining the influences of two iconographic magicians into a familiar, yet modern look.
